Recipe for Haggis

Some felines asked me what haggis is. This is a recipe I found on the internet here
  • 1 sheep's lung (illegal in the U.S.; may be omitted if not available)
  • 1 sheep's stomach
  • 1 sheep heart
  • 1 sheep liver
  • 1/2 lb fresh suet (kidney leaf fat is preferred)
  • 3/4 cup oatmeal (the ground type, NOT the Quaker Oats type!)
  • 3 onions, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup stock
Wash lungs and stomach well, rub with salt and rinse.

Remove membranes and excess fat.

Soak in cold salted water for several hours.

Turn stomach inside out for stuffing.

Cover heart and liver with cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Chop heart and coarsely grate liver. Toast oatmeal in a skillet on top of the stove, stirring frequently, until golden. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Loosely pack mixture into stomach, about two-thirds full. Remember, oatmeal expands in cooking.

Press any air out of stomach and truss securely. Put into boiling water to cover. Simmer for 3 hours, uncovered, adding more water as needed to maintain water level. Prick stomach several times with a sharp needle when it begins to swell; this keeps the bag from bursting. Place on a hot platter, removing trussing strings. Serve with a spoon. Ceremoniously served with "neeps, tatties and nips" -- mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, nips of whiskey.

YUMMY (it really is I promise)

My humans know what haggis is and they think it sounds very unappetizing!

My mom said she sort of knew what haggis was but now she says "ewwwwww!" Personally, that doesn't look too bad. Does it taste like chicken?

Lung, heart, liver and stomache are meat by products. I eat these in Temptations treats and also when I catch live prey. Meat by products are yummy!

I think haggis sounds great! Momma ate when she lived in England but she has never made it. (or the American vs. anyway) Daddy goes gagh at it and turns green. Maybe she will just have to make it for us 3 sometime. :) ~Queen Snickers

I have never had a sheep foods before. Mom knows what haggis is but she says I would not like it. She said it grosses her out.

My mommy knew what haggis was, but she's never been very sure about trying it out. I'm sure I would like it, though.

Hmm...wonder what it tastes like ~ sorry we haven't been around Faz ~ we've missed u ~ we read about what happened at the San Fransisco zoo - apparently the enclosure wall was too short. Our bean thinks even twenty feet can be scaled by a wild lion or tiger. But the animals in captivity lack the strength and agility of wild ones. The Siberian tigress concerned weighed around 130 kg ~ that's around what a lioness weighs but it's less than the average weight of a Siberian tiger - they are the largest cats on earth and weigh up to 800lbs!
Probably the lightness of weight allowed here to leap high enough ~ still the cat's behavior upon getting out reinforces the image of tigers as the most ferocious cat in the world ~ apex predators ~ we feel sorry for the poor bean who died and can imagine the fear of those moments...

love and purrs to u from the snowforest family :)

Haggis is like sausage in that it tastes lovely but when you actually stop and think about what goes inside it to make it....you kind of go off the idea of eating it ever again x

My mom tried haggis once and did not like it at all. Maybe your recipe is much better than what she tried!

We think we would probably like it - but our Mom says yuck. Even though she spent part of her growing up years in Europe, she has never liked organ meat. Oh well, we are glad you like it.

Oh thems folks are so sensitive. I ams sure it is just all the same stuff that is in a hamburger or sausages.

You better not tell them about a black pudding fry up then.

ok, so now wee has to figure out how to:
1. get out of the house without freaking out

2. drive the metal monster wif wheels

3. drive to the sheep farm up the street

4. kidnap a sheep

5. kill........ oh, that would not be good.
maybe we'll stick to ham stinky goodness. it does sound good to us though.

That sounds good to me but my Mom said Yuck! She already knew most of what went into it and knowing everything does not make it any better for her.

I'm sorry but that just doesn't sound too good to me. I'm not sure my tummy would be happy with that. Stop by tomorrow and you will see what Momo and I have been up to.

OK -- this doesn't sound too bad to me and Pumpy but I"m not sure it would go over big with the humans here.
