Two rats and two cats

These two mummified rats and two mummified cats are on a wall in an old Pub in Hastings called The Stag.

It is commonly believed they belonged to a witch called Hannah and they were found bricked into a ledge above her old hearth. No one really knows how they got there but during the Great Plague of 1665/6 it was believed that cats may be carriers of the disease.

Now these poor little cats live forever on the wall of the pub.

That is a very sad sight. Those kitties were starved to death, it appears. kk

Wow. That's a little creepy. How sad that the humans didn't know that cats helped to keep the plague away by catching the mice and rats that carried it.

What a bizarre thing to hang on a wall.

It's terrible how cats were treated during the plague. And sadly ironic.

I think a pub would be a good place to celebrate and honor cats, though.

Eww. That's kinda gross. I'm not too sorry for the rats, but I'm feeling for the cats..humans weren't too smart in those days, were they? They practically exterminated what was meant to be their salvation..seems to be a pattern among beans, doesn't it?

Those are the very oldest cats I have ever seen. I wish I could study them closer. And give them a toy to play with.

There are several cat and kitten mummies in Egyptain section in SS's university museum but isn't it a bit strange to display them in a pub?

That's pretty gross. I don't think I would like to see that hanging on a wall of a pub where I went for a drink and a meal.

Yuck.....
But thanks~~ I haven't seem mummified cats before... This is really neat!

The humans were intent about wiping out cats during that period. Because of this, rats came back in droves and brought the plague with it. Had they left the cats alone to do their work, there never would have been a plague.

This picture made all of us very sad for those poor kitties. Why would they hang that on the wall?

Ewww.. not sure I am thrilled about that!

whoa, even if she wasn't a "witch" she certainly was an evil b*tch for doing that.
bizare. i think people should say nice things to those kitties and rats to make up for a scary end. maybe a niptini toast. i'm not sure i'd hang that in a pub, but it is interesting (but cruel) what people used to believe would keep them safe.
